Author Interview : D. W. Ross

D. W. Ross is the author of the Onyxborn Chronicles, which currently includes Cold From the North and The Darkest Dusk.

Interview

Can you give us a little background on your series?

Sure. There are currently two novels from my Onyxborn Chronicle series out in the wild. The first is Cold From The North, the second is The Darkest Dusk. My third novel, and final of the series is due out Spring 2022. The story centers around prophecy, war, magic and strong bonds of friendship. Its been a hoot to write!

Can you give us any insight into your planning and writing process?

I’m a bit of a pantser. Planning is rare on my part, things just come to me and I’m like that would be cool… I try to make it work then go from there.

Silence or music or other when writing/editing?

Silence when writing initially then with music when I’m editing. Usually something like Two Steps From Hell

Based on your experience, can you offer a piece of advice to budding authors?

My favourite advice is embrace the delete key. It’s your best friend.

You can erase one book or series from your mind entirely so that you can read it again for a first time, which do you erase?

The First Law by Joe Abercrombie.

Who are some of your favourite authors/books?

I’ve enjoyed some really great books recently. Awesome ones have been Dragon Mage by ML Spencer, The Look of a King by Tom Dumbrell, The Legends of the First Empire series by Michael J Sullivan. I’ve just done a First Law reread which was awesome. I’m about to read Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill then on to The Wisdom of Crowds.

Who are your favourite book characters?

I loved Aram in Dragon Mage. Sand dan Glokta in the Abercrombie books is probably my favourite though

You can bring one world from a book or series to life and live there, which world do you choose

Probably the world setting from The Licanius series. There’s just something about it I loved and it really jumped off the page in parts that sounded incredible. I would also love to go a wee stroll through Rohan or Gondor, they look a wee bit like Scotland.

What book or series would you love to see on the big screen?

First Law would be amazing. I might fantasy cast it!

You can collaborate with one other author, who do you choose?

Oh damn. That’s a tough one. I think since I’m very much a story driven author I’d love to work on someone who writes characters with incredible depth so I am going to say ML Spencer.

Have any cultures/civilisations inspired your writing?

Viking culture for sure. Some elements of medieval culture. For battles I played on a lot of Greek mythology stories and epic battles as well.

What is your favourite mythical creature?

Always gonna be pegasus.

What is your favourite mythical race?

I’m a sucker for the uruk-hai. The aesthetic. The berserker mindset. The hand prints on the faces. Just bad ass.

You can have one superpower, what is it?

Travel through time. I would go back and peep all the time defining moments.

You have the ability to morph into any real—not mythical—creature. Which creature do you choose?

A haggis.

You can go back in time and live a different period of history, when do you choose?

I would say Scotland circa 1275 onwards.

You can meet any five people in the world, who would you choose?

Keanu Reeves, Kenny Omega, Billy Connely, Peyton Manning and Jamie Foxx.

Would you rather…

  • ride a dragon or fly a spaceship?
  • have the ability to fly or be indestructible?
    • Fly.
  • be an elf or an orc?
    • Elf.
  • have the ability to travel to mythical worlds, from your favourite books, or the ability to travel faster than light and visit planets and solar systems in this world?
    • World’s from fav books.
  • face one orc or three goblins in battle?
    • Three goblins.
  • be an expert swordsman or archer?
    • Archer
  • be able to wield elemental magic or raise and control the dead?
    • Elemental magic
  • live in a city under the ocean or one floating in the clouds?
    • Floating in the clouds
  • be able to see the past or see the future?
    • Future!

Thank you for taking the time D. W. Ross, we really appreciate it.
