Author Interview: Kristin Jacques

Kristin Jacques is an award-winning indie author of YA Dark Fantasy & LGBTQ Adult Paranormal.

Interview

Use three to five words to describe yourself.

Weird, manic, goofy, meticulous, frazzled

Can you give us a little background on your debut?

I love telling stories about found family, monstrous humans, and humane monsters. Both my adult and young adult stories feature darker themes but are about characters who come together and persevere together through the worst of events. I am also a big fan of enemies to lovers and ride or die friendships.

Can you give us any insight into your planning and writing process?

I used to be an utter panster, but writing series has changed me into a much more detail-oriented plotter.

Silence or music or other when writing/editing?

Every book has a play list 😀

Based on your experience, can you offer a piece of advice to budding authors?

I can’t say this enough but don’t compare your journey against other authors. Everyone’s milestones and successes look different, people have different ideas of success and there are so many paths to reach what you feel is success. Don’t compare yourself to snub or be jealous of another’s journey.

You can erase one book or series from your mind entirely so that you can read it again for the first time, which do you erase?

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. I reread this book nearly every year but I would love to have a chance to experience fresh again.

Who are some of your favourite authors/books?

Diana Wynne Jones, Ilona Andrews, Tamora Pierce, Terry Pratchett, A Lee Martinez, Gail Carriger, Seanan McGuire

Who are your favourite book characters?

Sophie Hatter, Samuel Vimes, Never Dead Ned, Alexia Tarabotti, October Daye (and Tybalt!), and basically the whole Baylor Family of the Hidden Legacy series

Do you have any favourite magic systems?

I really like the magic system in the Inn Keeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews, that mix of technology and magic is just chef’s kiss.

You can bring one world from a book or series to life and live there, which world do you choose

Dangerous as it would be, I would love to live in Discworld

What book or series would you love to see on the big screen?

Would love to see the Inn Keeper Chronicles done on the big screen. It’s got a strong Doctor Who vibe and reminds me of something of I wrote some time ago about a sentient inn that opened to other worlds.

You can collaborate with one other author, who do you choose?

M. Dalto. It will happen. It will.

Have any cultures/civilisations inspired your writing?

Oh so many. I am heavily inspired by world mythologies. I have a whole series where they intermingle.

What is your favourite mythical creature?

Tricksters

What is your favourite mythical race?

Dragons

You can have one superpower, what is it?

Time Manipulation.

You have the ability to morph into any real—not mythical—creature. Which creature do you choose?

Owl. I yearn to be a seething toasted marshmallow of rage.

You can go back in time and live a different period of history, when do you choose?

The 1980s.

You can meet any five people in the world, who would you choose?

I am far too awkward for this question

Would you rather…

  • ride a dragon or fly a spaceship?
  • have the ability to fly or be indestructible?
    • Indestructible.
  • be an elf or an orc?
    • Orc.
  • have the ability to travel to mythical worlds, from your favourite books, or the ability to travel faster than light and visit planets and solar systems in this world?
    • coin toss on that one
  • face one orc or three goblins in battle?
    • One orc. Three goblins is too many hands.
  • be an expert swordsman or archer?
    • Swordsman. My hand eye coordination is terrible.
  • be able to wield elemental magic or raise and control the dead?
  • live in a city under the ocean or one floating in the clouds?
    • Ocean
  • be able to see the past or see the future?
    • Future
