Author Interview: Luke Tarzian

Interview

Use three to five words to describe yourself.

Whiskey. Dogs. Nonsense.

Can you give us a little background on your debut?

I write psychological dark fantasy. Currently, I’ve released VULTURES, the first book in the Shadow Twins series, and THE WORLD MAKER PARABLE, the first book in the Adjacent Monsters duology. December 21, 2021 will see the release of THE WORLD BREAKER REQUIEM, the second book in the Adjacent Monsters duology. Both series deal with pretty heavy themes, mainly loss, regret, grief, and guilt and are written primarily as means to examining mental health.

Can you give us any insight into your planning and writing process?

Pure unadulterated chaos. I have notes of the major points I want to hit, but most of the writing is discovery. Time is also at a premium; my forthcoming novel, THE WORLD BREAKER REQUIEM, was written primarily on an iPhone while taking a bath with a glass of scotch.

Silence or music or other when writing/editing?

Music. Something fantastical and atmospheric.

Based on your experience, can you offer a piece of advice to budding authors?

If you’re planning to self-publish, really do the research before launching. Look at how others have launched books, look at marketing. I cannot stress enough the importance of a newsletter/email list; it’s something I wish I would have gotten started on prior to debuting almost three years ago. Above all else? Don’t be a jerk and don’t be a ladder climber. Make friends and enjoy the community.

You can erase one book or series from your mind entirely so that you can read it again for the first time, which do you erase?

The Way of Kings

Who are some of your favourite authors/books?

Man, this is such a hard question, haha. Authors, in no specific order: Neil Gaiman, Brandon Sanderson, Ursula Le Guin, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Sarah Chorn, Krystle Matar, Dom Watson, Nicole Krauss, Robert Jordan, Nnedi Okorafor. Books, in no specific order: Mistborn: Shadows of Self, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, The Silver Linings Playbook, The History of Love, Seraphina’s Lament, The Legacy of the Brightwash, Neverwhere, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The Four Agreements, The View From the Cheap Seats, The Way of Kings, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Kingdom Come.

What book or series would you love to see on the big screen?

I would LOVE to see a proper adaptation of Earthsea. I didn’t get to this series until I was an adult but Ursula Le Guin is one of my favorite writers and I think it would be a real treat to see that world imagined as it was meant to (piss off, SYFY Channel adaptation).

You can collaborate with one other author, who do you choose?

Sarah Chorn. We’re friends and I’m a huge fan of her work. I think we would wreck readers emotionally which is something we both already do.

You can have one superpower, what is it?

Flight

You have the ability to morph into any real creature. Which creature do you choose?

Probably a wolf. They’re such beautiful animals. It would be interesting to see the world from their point of view.

You can meet any five people in the world, who would you choose?

I’m going to answer this assuming dead people count as well: Neil Gaiman, Edgar Allan Poe, Jonathan Van Ness, Ursula Le Guin, Barack Obama

Would you rather…

  • ride a dragon or fly a spaceship?
  • have the ability to fly or be indestructible?
    • Fly
  • be an elf or an orc?
    • Elf
  • have the ability to travel to mythical worlds, from your favourite books, or the ability to travel faster than light and visit planets and solar systems in this universe?
    • The latter. It would be pretty cool to see what else is out there.
  • be an expert swordsman or archer?
    • Archer
  • be able to wield elemental magic or raise and control the dead?
    • Elemental Magic
  • live in a city under the ocean or one floating in the clouds?
    • ity floating in the clouds, without a doubt.
  • be able to see the past or see the future?
    • The past. I think there’s a lot to be said for not looking too far into the future.

Thank you for taking the time, we really appreciate it.
